Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the current IPL champions, have named Ajinkya Rahane as their captain for the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Venkatesh Iyer will serve as the vice-captain.
Rahane expressed his honor at leading KKR, acknowledging the franchise’s successful history in the IPL. He praised the team’s balanced composition and voiced his enthusiasm for defending their championship title.
Despite not being initially targeted in the mega auction, KKR secured Rahane at his base price. However, KKR CEO Venky Mysore highlighted Rahane’s valuable leadership experience and maturity. He also recognized Venkatesh Iyer’s leadership qualities and his significant role within the franchise, expressing confidence in their partnership.
This marks Rahane’s second stint with KKR, having previously played for them in 2022. While his 2022 season was less impactful, he experienced a resurgence with Chennai Super Kings in 2023. Rahane’s proven leadership includes captaining India to a Test series victory in Australia and leading Mumbai to domestic titles, including the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Iyer, a key player for KKR since 2021 and instrumental in their 2024 title win, was re-acquired by the franchise for a significant sum in the auction. He had previously stated his readiness to captain KKR if given the opportunity.
KKR will commence the IPL 2025 season at home against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22. They earned the right to host the opener as the previous season’s champions. Notably, Shreyas Iyer, who captained KKR to victory in 2024, was not retained and will now captain Punjab Kings.
With KKR’s captain announcement, Delhi Capitals are the only IPL team yet to name their captain. Rishabh Pant, formerly with Delhi Capitals, will now lead Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025.
