Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batsman Ambati Rayudu playfully mocked Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on live television, pointing out their ongoing quest for an IPL title. CSK and RCB have a strong rivalry, fueled by their massive fan bases, although CSK boasts five IPL championships to RCB’s zero.
Despite reaching the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, RCB has been unable to capitalize on these opportunities.
During the Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand, former RCB coach Sanjay Bangar discussed the franchise’s prospects for the upcoming season.
Bangar mentioned on Star Sports, “The team has performed consistently over the past 4-5 years, reaching the playoffs four times. Last year’s comeback to the playoffs after losing seven matches was remarkable. Such a comeback can propel a team to overcome the next challenge.”
However, Rayudu interjected humorously, suggesting RCB would again reach the playoffs only to be defeated in Qualifier 2.
“Correct, Sanjay Bhai. RCB will clear the next hurdle. So, next time, RCB will reach Qualifier 2 (laughs),” Rayudu joked.
Bangar responded, “That’s unfair. Hitting below the belt. RCB fans are watching!”
Rayudu simply replied, “Let them watch.”
Recently, Rayudu admitted RCB would eventually win the title but expressed his hope that he wouldn’t have to witness it.
On the Raw Talks podcast, Rayudu stated, “I believe it’s only a matter of time before RCB wins the trophy. But I sincerely hope that year is far away (laughing).”
RCB is set to begin their IPL 2025 season against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on March 22. Rajat Patidar will captain RCB this season.
RCB’s Director of Cricket added that Virat Kohli participated in the meeting where Patidar was chosen as captain for the 2025 season.
He further stated, “Andy and I recently spent time with Virat in Ahmedabad, and it was great to discuss the captaincy with him. He was clearly enthusiastic and excited about this decision and appointment. He is very happy for Rajat and fully supports him, recognizing Rajat’s deserving nature for this opportunity.”
