Mumbai Indians were compelled to bring in fast bowler Ashwani Kumar as a concussion substitute for South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch during their IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. This action was taken after Bosch was struck on his helmet during the final over of the first innings. The inclusion of Ashwani made him the 13th player utilised by MI in their playing eleven for the match. Notably, earlier in the game, Karn Sharma had already entered as an impact substitute for Rohit Sharma.
Bosch, who had contributed 27 runs from 22 balls, including one boundary and two sixes, sustained the blow to his helmet while attempting a powerful sweep against a sharp bumper delivered by Prasidh Krishna off the off-stump line. He received treatment from the physio on the field but was subsequently run out on the very next delivery.
In this crucial encounter against the Gujarat Titans, the Mumbai Indians` batting order suffered a significant collapse. After Will Jacks (53) and Suryakumar Yadav (35) built a substantial 71-run partnership for the third wicket, MI lost four wickets for a mere 26 runs. Following the swift dismissals of both Surya and Jacks, the team found itself struggling at 123/7 by the 17th over, with Naman Dhir also getting out for seven.
With the five-time IPL champions facing the real possibility of failing to reach a competitive total of 150, Bosch provided a late flourish in the 20th over, hammering consecutive sixes off Prasidh Krishna.
However, fate intervened on the third ball of the over when Bosch was hit directly on the helmet. He displayed symptoms indicative of concussion during the mid-innings break. Adhering strictly to the established concussion protocols, the Mumbai Indians management decided to bring in Ashwani Kumar as a like-for-like replacement.
