Usman Khawaja, the Australian opening batsman, became the subject of controversy when he missed Queensland’s crucial match against South Australia. He was seen in Melbourne with his wife Rachel at the Formula One Grand Prix. Initially, it was suggested that Khawaja skipped the game to prepare for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June. However, it was later revealed he had a minor injury from a previous match.
The issue escalated when Khawaja was photographed at the F1 race. Joe Dawes, Queensland Cricket’s head of elite cricket, expressed his disappointment that Khawaja did not play.
Dawes stated, based on their medical staff’s assessment, there was no medical reason preventing Khawaja from playing. He voiced his disappointment that Khawaja missed an opportunity to play for Queensland when other players were eager to participate.
Khawaja’s actions have raised concerns about his participation in the final against South Australia.
Interestingly, Test spinner Nathan Lyon also attended the F1 race but has faced minimal criticism for similar behavior.
Lyon had been absent from all Sheffield Shield games for New South Wales since returning from the Sri Lanka tour. Reports indicate he cited workload management as the reason for opting out.
Australian centrally contracted players are not obligated to play in state-level Sheffield Shield matches.
Journalist Robert Craddock questioned Lyon’s explanation.
Craddock remarked on the workload issue cited by Lyon, a spin bowler with no first-class games for two months. He also mentioned Steve Smith’s presence in America while NSW was playing.
Craddock noted the accepted trend of players, particularly in NSW with numerous Test players, not participating in state games.
Queensland is set to play against South Australia in Adelaide for the Shield final, but Khawaja’s participation is uncertain due to strained relations with the state team.
However, Queensland and Australian teammate Marnus Labuschagne defended Khawaja, suggesting his focus on being ready for Australia should be supported.
Labuschagne stated that they understand Khawaja needs to ensure he is fresh and injury-free to perform at his best for Australia.
