South African fast bowler Dane Paterson will play for Middlesex in seven County Championship matches in April and May. This move comes after his departure from Nottinghamshire and offers him a valuable opportunity to play at Lord’s. It also allows him to make a strong case for selection in the World Test Championship final on June 11.

Dane Paterson has achieved five-wicket hauls in his two most recent Test matches.

Paterson, aged 35, impressed in his recent Test appearances for South Africa, taking five wickets in an innings against both Sri Lanka and Pakistan. His contract with Middlesex includes four games at Lord’s, the same venue where South Africa is set to compete against Australia in the WTC final.

During his four seasons with Nottinghamshire, Paterson was a consistent performer, claiming 180 Championship wickets at an average of 23.25, including seven five-wicket hauls. Despite this success, Nottinghamshire chose not to extend his contract. He will now join Middlesex, aiming to lead their bowling attack following Ethan Bamber’s move to Warwickshire.

Paterson expressed his excitement about joining Middlesex, highlighting the honor of playing for the club and his determination to contribute to their promotion back to Division One. He is particularly looking forward to playing at Lord’s. While acknowledging his sadness at leaving Nottinghamshire, he cherishes his time there and the friendships he made.

Paterson joins Kyle Verreynne, who signed with Nottinghamshire, as South African players preparing for the WTC final in county cricket. David Bedingham is also expected to return to Durham. Rassie van der Dussen recently declined a county move. Australian players Cameron Green and Beau Webster will also use the Championship to prepare for the final, while many other potential participants will be engaged in the IPL or PSL during April and May.

Middlesex, after not signing an overseas player last year due to financial constraints, has announced three overseas signings this month, including Kane Williamson and Josh Little, in addition to Paterson. They have also signed Zafar Gohar and Ben Geddes to strengthen their squad.

Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s Director of Cricket, expressed his delight at securing Paterson’s signing, emphasizing his quality and potential impact on their pace attack. He noted Paterson’s proven success in English conditions and the valuable experience he brings.

In other news, Durham has signed South Australian seamer Brendan Doggett for a short-term stint at the beginning of the 2025 season.
