Derbyshire’s all-rounder David Lloyd has resigned from his position as club captain before the 2025 season. Lloyd, who joined from Glamorgan in 2023, captained the County Championship team last year. Unfortunately, Derbyshire finished at the bottom of Division Two, receiving the wooden spoon.
In his first complete summer season with the club, Lloyd, aged 32, had an average of 23.47 with the bat and 31.00 with the ball in the Championship. He has decided to step down from the captaincy to concentrate on improving his personal performance.
Mickey Arthur, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, commented, “David dedicated himself to the captaincy and was a superb leader. However, the mental strain of leading the team, combined with the pressure to regain personal form and family commitments, suggests that it is beneficial for everyone if we reduce his burden.”
Arthur added, “David was honest with me; he is committed to contributing to the team. His experience and leadership will remain invaluable both on and off the field. I anticipate seeing his best performance this summer.”
Derbyshire underwent a significant restructuring before the 2024 season. Lloyd assumed the captaincy following Leus du Plooy’s departure, and several new players joined. However, progress was limited. After being winless in 2023, they achieved only one victory alongside six losses, ending last in the division.
Despite this, that single victory did mark the end of a five-year winless streak in Championship cricket at their home ground in Derby.
Lloyd stated, “This was not an easy decision, but after consulting with close friends, family, and teammates over the winter, I believe this is the right step to allow me to refocus on my game.”
“It has been an honor to captain Derbyshire. I am now eager to play with less pressure, continue learning from Mickey and the coaching team, and demonstrate my capabilities to our members and supporters.”
“Our goal is to become competitive in all formats again. I am excited to contribute and support our new club captain in any way I can.”
