Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has voiced strong disapproval of Pakistan’s arrangements for the Champions Trophy, citing the inadequate drainage system at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium as a “bad advertisement” for the nation. During a recent Champions Trophy match between Afghanistan and Australia at the venue, the stadium’s poor drainage was clearly evident.
Rain interrupted the game between Afghanistan and Australia at Gaddafi Stadium after 12.5 overs. Following the rain, numerous puddles formed across the field.
Ground staff attempted to clear the water using mops and other methods. Despite their efforts, the match was eventually abandoned, and both teams were awarded a point each.
Madan Lal expressed his disappointment with the drainage system, stating to ANI, “This is a bad advertisement for Pakistan. While stadium renovations are acceptable, prioritizing the drainage system and super soppers should be paramount. This reflects poorly on Pakistan. I observed the match yesterday and their methods for water removal, which drew considerable criticism.”
Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, also addressed recent criticism regarding India playing all its matches at a single venue, while other teams must travel to various locations in Pakistan.
Former England cricketers Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton had previously spoken out about the perceived advantage India gains by playing all its games in Dubai.
Addressing these concerns, Madan Lal acknowledged, “Yes, there is an advantage, but India clarified this situation early on. Nevertheless, teams will still complain.”
Having secured convincing victories against Bangladesh and Pakistan, India has advanced to the semi-finals. Their final group match against New Zealand will determine the final Group A standings and semi-final pairings.
Madan Lal believes that regardless of their semi-final opponent, the upcoming match against New Zealand on Sunday will serve as valuable preparation for the tournament’s knockout stage.
“It doesn’t matter [who the opponent is]. Tomorrow’s match should be beneficial as it will be good practice for the semi-final,” he added.
