Heinrich Klaasen has announced his ambition to prove he is ‘the best in the world’ after his innings of 64 runs off 56 balls helped South Africa secure a seven-wicket victory over England. This win confirmed South Africa’s place in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy.

Klaasen had to sit out South Africa’s previous game due to an elbow issue but returned strongly against England in Karachi. He achieved his fifth consecutive ODI half-century, contributing significantly from the No. 4 position as South Africa chased down their target of 180 runs in under 30 overs.

In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Klaasen shared that he and head coach Rob Walter have set a high goal for him to establish himself as the best player globally throughout the Champions Trophy. ‘I’ve challenged myself and Rob Walter this tournament: I want to be the best in the world,’ Klaasen stated.

‘My goal is to be the best globally, and I believe I can handle various game situations effectively. For me, the key is to consistently perform and stay at the crease as long as possible, just like I did tonight. I’m quite satisfied with my performance tonight. I scored runs by maintaining composure and trusting my technique. I’m confident in my swing, so if everything clicks, I’m very pleased.’

Highlighting his approach of grounded play, Klaasen hit 11 fours and no sixes before being caught at short third man while attempting to score the winning runs off Adil Rashid, with only six runs needed. ‘I felt like jumping off a building after getting out like that tonight,’ he joked, but expressed satisfaction with his recent form. He also mentioned simplifying his training routine since his elbow injury.

‘I feel very fortunate with my current game and understanding of it,’ he added. ‘I’m not someone who faces all our fast bowlers in practice. I focus on a few drills and some spin bowling. Currently, I’m hitting the ball from the sweet spot of the bat consistently. That’s my focus, and as long as my technique is solid, I’m content.’

Klaasen, at 33, has been performing at his peak since turning 30. He mentioned his strategy of keeping things straightforward, reacting to each delivery instead of pre-planning excessively. ‘It’s about staying still at the crease,’ he explained. ‘About three years ago, I really focused on this, just staying calm and not overthinking the game.’

Aiden Markram, who captained South Africa in place of the unwell Temba Bavuma, commented on Klaasen’s performance: ‘It’s always fantastic to see him in action. He’s been in incredible form for many months now, and for him to perform like he never left after an elbow niggle is a very positive sign for our team.’
