Sharma needs to decide if he will play Test cricket in the new World Test Championship cycle. If he focuses solely on ODIs, he will have around 27 international matches until the 2027 World Cup, excluding IPL and domestic tournaments. Otherwise, if he opts out of Test cricket, his schedule will be limited to nine ODI series in two years.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young and promising player, is considered a potential successor. The choice between Sharma’s experience and giving opportunities to young players will depend on the selectors’ and BCCI management’s decision. A former selector emphasized that decisions about significant players like Sharma and Kohli are made at the highest levels of the BCCI.
