Inzamam-ul-Haq’s ‘IPL’ Criticism of BCCI During Champions Trophy Row

Team India’s successful campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has not only showcased the strength of Indian cricket but also highlighted contrasts with Pakistan cricket. Both nations have their T20 leagues, the IPL and PSL, each with unique regulations. A key rule by the BCCI prevents Indian players from participating in foreign leagues, a decision that former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has openly criticized.

During his commentary role at the ICC Champions Trophy, Inzamam addressed this issue, proposing that other cricket boards should consider restricting their players from the IPL in response to the BCCI’s stance on Indian players in overseas leagues.

“Leaving aside the Champions Trophy, top players participate in the IPL, yet Indian players are not allowed in other leagues. Other boards should consider preventing their players from joining the IPL. If the BCCI restricts its players, then other boards should also take a similar stand,” he stated during a Pakistani TV discussion.

Recently, the PCB announced the schedule for PSL 2025, which overlaps with the IPL. This scheduling conflict means international players will have to choose between participating in either the PSL or the IPL.

PSL Season 10 is set to commence on April 11, featuring a match between defending champions Islamabad United and two-time champions Lahore Qalandars at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The tournament will span 34 matches from April 11 to May 18, with Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium hosting 13 matches, including the eliminators and the final on May 18. An exhibition match is also planned for April 8 in Peshawar, with team details to be announced later.

Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will host 11 matches, including Qualifier 1 on May 13. Karachi’s National Stadium and Multan Cricket Stadium will each host five matches.

PSL Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer commented, “Over the past decade, the PSL has become a globally recognized tournament, showcasing the best of Pakistani cricket talent.”

“Fans this year will witness both high-profile international cricketers and 34 thrilling matches across Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi.”

“In our efforts to broaden the PSL’s reach, we are excited to host an exhibition match in Peshawar before the tournament begins. This is a significant step in bringing top-level cricket to Peshawar, a city with a strong passion for the sport.”
