Kevin Pietersen, mentor of Delhi Capitals, believes KL Rahul is the top choice to bat at number four and keep wickets for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Despite previous questions about his approach in the shortest format, Rahul has adapted, becoming the leading run-scorer for Delhi Capitals this season. He faces stiff competition for the wicket-keeper-batter spot in the national squad from players like Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Dhruv Jurel, and Ishan Kishan.
Rahul hasn`t featured in India`s T20 squad since the 2022 World Cup. However, Pietersen feels Rahul has performed well enough to earn a return and is best suited for the wicket-keeper-batter role. Pietersen stated he would place KL at number four in India`s T20 lineup, given the abundance of opening options, and rely on him for keeping duties.
Rahul himself acknowledged his changed approach to T20s earlier in the season. Pietersen, a former England batting great, was particularly impressed by Rahul`s recent performances for India in ODIs, noting his ability to finish games effectively. Pietersen shared that he`s had meaningful conversations with Rahul about batting and adapting his game from a more defensive, classical technique learned in his youth to suit the evolving T20 format. He highlighted how challenging it is for players in their thirties to make such fundamental changes and praised Rahul for his acceptance and successful adaptation.
Regarding playing conditions, Pietersen expressed satisfaction with challenging batting surfaces seen this IPL season, contrasting them with high-scoring games where bowlers are heavily punished. He believes tougher pitches reveal the true quality of batters who can find rhythm and manage situations effectively, considering such wickets beneficial for T20 cricket occasionally.
Speaking about his role with Delhi Capitals, Pietersen understands that significant technical changes are difficult during a short tournament. However, he aims to lay foundational principles and work on players` mental game for long-term improvement. He cited working with Abhishek Porel as an example, focusing on adjustments that might not yield immediate results but will benefit his game significantly in the future, helping him become a more destructive player.
