KL Rahul Comfortable Batting at Number 6, Says Coach

The shift of KL Rahul to the No. 6 batting position has been a significant point of discussion. However, India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, has stated that the wicketkeeper-batter has fully embraced this new role. This adjustment is seen as beneficial, providing greater depth to the team’s batting capabilities.

KL Rahul has previously achieved considerable success batting at No. 5, amassing over 1,000 runs with an average exceeding 50. Despite this, since the ODI series against Sri Lanka last year, he has been positioned one place lower in the batting order. Rahul has demonstrated his adaptability to this somewhat unfamiliar slot, notably with his unbeaten 42 against Australia in the Champions Trophy semifinal.

Together with Hardik Pandya, Rahul contributed a rapid 34 runs, effectively securing the victory against Australia.

Kotak emphasized Rahul’s versatility, mentioning that he arrived nearly an hour ahead of the scheduled net practice.

“He is a player who is capable of opening the innings, batting at No. 4 or 5, and now effectively fulfilling the demands of the No. 6 position. He adapts well and is content with the role he is currently playing,” Kotak commented.

The former Saurashtra batter added that having a dependable batter at No. 6 is advantageous for the team.

“When he performs well in that position, it is also beneficial for him as he faces different match situations. This is ultimately great for the team’s overall performance.”

He further stated, “From my conversations with him, he is happy to contribute in any way the team requires, and he has been consistently doing so.”

Kotak dismissed any notion of excessive pressure on India leading up to the final. He explained that senior players, who have experience in such high-stakes situations, are instrumental in maintaining a calm atmosphere within the dressing room as they approach the crucial day.

“The senior and younger players are in constant communication. This is invaluable. Rohit, Virat, Hardik, along with Shami and Jadeja, are actively engaging in discussions. They bring a collective experience of 15-20 years.”

“They are sharing their insights with players who have been part of the team for two or three years. Experience is undoubtedly a great teacher. But learning from seasoned players who share their two decades of experience creates a fantastic team environment,” he concluded.
