Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has identified the anticipated duel between Virat Kohli, the celebrated batsman, and Adam Zampa, the Australian leg-spinner, as a pivotal clash to monitor in the Champions Trophy semi-final at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday. Rayudu emphasized the historical context, noting that Zampa has dismissed Kohli five times in One Day Internationals since 2017. This history sets the stage for a fascinating contest, particularly given the slow playing surfaces expected in Dubai.
Rayudu pointed out Kohli’s recent challenges against leg-spin, mentioning that the Indian star has been dismissed by leg-spinners five times since the beginning of 2024. During this period, Kohli has accumulated only 37 runs against this bowling type, with a strike-rate of 48.68. Speaking to JioHotstar, Rayudu stated, “The key battle in the semi-final will be Adam Zampa against Virat Kohli. While Virat has faced some difficulties against leg-spin recently, his current form in this tournament should serve him well when facing Australia.”
Reflecting on Kohli’s recent performance against New Zealand, Rayudu noted that despite scoring two early boundaries in his 300th ODI, Kohli’s innings was cut short at 11 runs. Glenn Phillips executed an exceptional catch at backward point, leaving Kohli and spectators stunned.
Rayudu commented on Kohli’s milestone game, stating that while luck wasn’t on Kohli’s side, his intent and hunger for a significant score were evident. He added, “On significant occasions, Virat Kohli typically rises to the occasion and delivers memorable moments. Unfortunately, Glenn Phillips made an incredible catch to dismiss him. It was simply one of those days where luck was not in his favor. However, we hope he channels this desire into a substantial innings in the semi-finals. We all want to see him perform at his best, and he has our complete support. Glenn Phillips just spoiled the celebration.”
