In a remarkable display of fast bowling, Matt Henry achieved a five-wicket haul against India in Dubai, moving past the legendary Richard Hadlee to become New Zealand’s eighth-highest wicket-taker in One Day Internationals (ODIs). During the Champions Trophy match between India and New Zealand on Sunday, Henry, a seasoned right-arm fast bowler, exceeded Hadlee’s previous record of 158 ODI wickets.
Henry’s impressive spell of 5 wickets for 42 runs dismantled the Indian batting lineup. This outstanding performance has elevated his ODI wicket count to 163 in 90 matches, with an average of 24.85 and a strike rate of 28.78.
Among Henry’s wickets were key Indian batsmen including Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja. He concluded his dominant bowling display by dismissing Mohammed Shami on the final delivery of India’s innings.
Henry made an early breakthrough, continuing his strong record against India in the powerplay overs. He has now taken 10 wickets in the first 10 overs against India, averaging 20.20 with a strike rate of 28.8 and an economy rate of 4.20, showcasing his effectiveness against the Indian team.
Spearheading the New Zealand pace attack, Henry quickly made his presence felt by dismissing the in-form Shubman Gill for just 2 runs. Gill was undone by a sharp inswinging delivery that trapped him leg before wicket.
Henry then delivered another significant blow by removing Kohli, who was playing in his 300th ODI. Glenn Phillips contributed with an exceptional one-handed catch at point to dismiss the Indian star batsman.
He also broke a developing partnership between Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. With a shorter delivery, Henry induced Jadeja to play a cut shot, which was caught by Kane Williamson with a diving one-handed catch at backward point.
When Hardik Pandya began to threaten a large Indian total, Henry outsmarted him with a slower delivery. Pandya, attempting a big hit, was caught by Rachin Ravindra at deep square leg.
