Sophie Devine has shared that she considered retiring from international cricket during her recent break. However, the prospect of the upcoming ODI World Cup played a significant role in her decision to continue her career with New Zealand.
Devine took a break from cricket at the beginning of 2025 to focus on her well-being. This led to her withdrawal from WPL 2025, despite being retained by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and her absence from two home white-ball series against Sri Lanka.

When asked if retirement had crossed her mind during her time off, Devine admitted that it had. She acknowledged her age as a factor in these thoughts. However, she expressed her excitement to be back and her intention to focus on each day, enjoying her time with the White Ferns.
Speaking before her return for the T20I series against Australia in Auckland, Devine mentioned that franchise opportunities and, most importantly, New Zealand’s ambition to win both the T20 and 50-over World Cups in India later this year, motivated her to continue playing. She felt she still had more to contribute.
Devine reflected on her long career and considered her future beyond playing. While overseas franchise cricket is appealing, her priority remains playing for the White Ferns, especially with the upcoming World Cup. She felt a strong desire to continue playing for New Zealand.
Devine has not played competitively since January 24. Her last international match was in December against Australia. This break followed a busy period, including tours of England and India around New Zealand’s T20 World Cup victory, and playing in the WBBL.
Devine described the past 12 to 18 months as intense, personally and for the White Ferns, especially with winning the World Cup. The impact was greater than she initially realized, necessitating a break supported by New Zealand Cricket, family, and friends.
She emphasized the importance of mental health and taking time off when needed. Devine has taken mental health breaks previously, including in 2023-24 and 2021.
Describing her recent break as ‘hibernation,’ Devine explained she had distanced herself but recently started watching her team again. Now refreshed, she encourages others to openly discuss their need for time off for their well-being.
Devine urged people to speak up and seek support, whether athletes or students, highlighting the importance of professional help and support systems for everyone facing challenges.
