Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant believes that while the Indian Premier League (IPL) is attractive, young cricketers should always prioritize representing their country. He emphasizes that if one aims to play for India, other opportunities, including the IPL, will naturally follow.

Pant, a member of India’s Champions Trophy squad and an international player since 2017, stated in an interview that his childhood dream was solely to play for India, not even considering the IPL initially. He acknowledges the IPL’s significance as a platform but firmly believes national ambition should come first.

According to Pant, maintaining a broader perspective is key to success. He always had faith in his potential to play for India, and he feels fortunate for having debuted at the age of 18.

Known for his aggressive batting and distinctive shots, including one-handed sixes where the bat sometimes slips, Pant explained this unusual occurrence. He mentioned that it often happens because he loosely grips the bat with his bottom hand, primarily using it for support to prevent it from dominating. He focuses on maintaining a firm grip with his top hand.

Pant added that when he stretches to hit balls, especially those wide or short of ideal length, the success rate might be lower, around 30-40%. However, depending on the game’s situation, he’s willing to take that risk. His mindset is geared towards maximizing scoring opportunities.

He clarifies that when he extends his reach for a shot, actions that might look like throwing the bat are actually attempts to regain balance and maximize the delivery’s potential. His singular focus at that moment is to find the boundary, even if it means the bat slipping or hitting him.

Pant also credits his childhood gymnastics training for contributing to his cricket skills and fitness. His gymnastics coach had predicted its benefits, and Indian team trainer Basu Sir acknowledged in 2018-19 the lasting positive impact of his early gymnastics training. Pant’s continued practice of handsprings has significantly aided his overall fitness as a cricketer.
