Former captain Shahid Afridi has raised concerns about the selection of Shadab Khan in the national T20 team. Afridi believes that Pakistan cricket is struggling because of flawed decision-making.
Afridi questioned the reasons behind Shadab Khan’s return to the T20 squad, especially since Khan had been out of favor since the last T20 World Cup. Shadab was not only recalled but also appointed as vice-captain for the series against New Zealand.
“What are the merits for his recall? What domestic performances justify his selection?” Afridi asked during a media interaction. He emphasized that progress in Pakistan cricket is impossible without decisions based on merit.
“We constantly discuss preparation, but when tournaments come, we fail and then talk about fixing things later. The truth is, Pakistan cricket is in intensive care because of wrong decisions,” Afridi stated.
He pointed out the lack of consistency in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s strategies and leadership. “There’s no continuity or consistency in the Board’s decisions and policies. We keep changing captains, coaches, and players, but who is accountable within the Board?” he questioned.
Afridi expressed his disappointment with coaches blaming players to protect their jobs and managements shifting blame to save their positions. “How can cricket improve when there’s constant uncertainty for captains and coaches?” he wondered.
Regarding PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Afridi acknowledged him as a well-intentioned individual but noted his limited cricket knowledge. “He wants to contribute positively to Pakistan cricket, but ultimately he relies on advice. I advised him to focus on one role, as being PCB Chairman is a full-time commitment,” Afridi concluded.
