Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul’s runs on the slow Dubai pitches were crucial to India’s victory at the Champions Trophy 2025. Despite a year of ups and downs, including winning the IPL and being dropped from central contracts, Iyer has proven his worth to the team. Dilip Vengsarkar, the 1983 World Cup winner and former BCCI chief selector, expressed his satisfaction with the middle-order batsman’s performance.
Vengsarkar stated, “Iyer performed very well, but I wasn’t pleased with how he was dismissed in the final. He should have stayed until the end and secured the win. However, I am glad to see him realize his potential. KL also played some valuable innings at number six, but I’m still not convinced about Axar Patel batting ahead of him at five. The left-right batting combination might be the only reason for that decision.”
Vengsarkar also acknowledged the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar.
“Credit should also be given to the selectors. They supported Rohit after the Australia series. Even the decision to include five spinners in the squad turned out to be a masterstroke,” he added.
Iyer was India’s highest scorer in the tournament, with 243 runs in five matches, including two consecutive half-centuries against Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage. He also contributed a vital 48 runs in the final, playing a key role in overcoming the spin challenge on Dubai’s slow wickets.
“When you realize you’re the top run-scorer for the team, it’s an incredible feeling. It feels surreal. But I feel I could have finished the game (final),” Iyer said.
“Ultimately, every player wants to finish the game for the team. I’m happy to accept this, and I’m extremely pleased with how everyone contributed to the team’s victory,” he added.
Iyer was also named in the Champions Trophy’s Team of the Tournament alongside Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and Varun Chakaravarthy. “Winning my first ICC trophy is a fantastic feeling. This is my fifth title this year, and I’m truly thankful and blessed,” he concluded.
