Shubman Gill, the talented Indian batsman, has been nominated for the prestigious ICC Player of the Month award for February, thanks to his exceptional performance in the ODI series against England. He is competing against Australia’s Steve Smith and New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips for this title.
Gill’s nomination comes after he amassed 406 runs in five ODIs during February, maintaining an impressive average of 101.50 and a strike rate of 94.19. His standout series was against England, where he scored consistently high scores: 87 in Nagpur, 60 in Cuttack, and a brilliant 112 in Ahmedabad. His remarkable performance earned him the Player of the Series award in India’s dominant 3-0 victory.
Continuing his form, Gill further demonstrated his prowess by scoring an unbeaten 101 against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy. He followed this with a valuable 46 against Pakistan, contributing significantly to India’s progression to the tournament’s semifinals.
Steve Smith also had a strong February, particularly in the Test series against Sri Lanka. He scored 141 and 131 in two matches, with a striking strike rate of 136.00, and was recognized as the Player of the Series. In the subsequent ODI series, he added scores of 12 and 29.
Glenn Phillips of New Zealand impressed with 236 runs in five ODIs, striking at 124.21. His three unbeaten innings were instrumental in New Zealand’s triumph in the tri-series held in Pakistan, which also included South Africa. His notable scores were 106 not out against Pakistan in Lahore, 28 not out against South Africa at the same venue, and 20 not out against Pakistan in the final in Karachi.
Phillips carried his momentum into the Champions Trophy, starting with 61 against Pakistan in Karachi and another unbeaten 21 against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.
