During Team India’s Champions Trophy celebrations, Shubman Gill’s father, Lakhwinder, was seen dancing with Rishabh Pant. India won against New Zealand by four wickets in the final on Sunday, March 9 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In a popular video, Lakhwinder was seen doing bhangra with Pant, who didn’t play in the tournament. BCCI also posted a video showing Lakhwinder sharing a similar moment with his son Shubman.
In the video shared by BCCI, Pant and Arshdeep Singh greeted Gill’s father and joined him in ‘Bhangra’.
Gill began the tournament with a century against Bangladesh on February 20, but scored 46, 2, 8 and 31 in the following matches.
After the victory, Shubman Gill spoke about the win and praised Rohit Sharma’s leadership and batting style.
He mentioned feeling great and enjoying Rohit’s batting, highlighting Rohit’s advice to bat till the end regardless of the score. Gill noted the team’s improvement since missing out in 2023 and appreciated Rohit’s intense and supportive leadership.
Gill also acknowledged New Zealand’s strong performance and ability to execute plans under pressure, recognizing their consistent effort in the final.
There’s speculation about Gill potentially succeeding Rohit as captain in the future, but Rohit has stated he has no immediate retirement plans from this format of cricket, dismissing any rumors.
This victory marks India’s third ICC Champions Trophy title, including a shared title with Sri Lanka in 2002 and a win in 2013 under MS Dhoni. This win makes India the most successful team in Champions Trophy history, surpassing Australia with three titles.
