Rain interrupted the first ODI
Despite a resilient unbeaten score of 66 from Harshitha Samarawickrama, the first One Day International between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was unfortunately called off due to rain. The match was stopped after 36.4 overs, with Sri Lanka at 147 for 5.
New Zealand’s captain, Suzie Bates, chose to field first. Sri Lanka’s innings began with an early setback as captain Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed by Bree Illing. However, Vishmi Gunaratne and Samarawickrama stabilized the innings with a 45-run partnership. Sri Lanka’s momentum faltered when Gunaratne was caught out by Jess Kerr in the 19th over, triggering a slide from 70/1 to 94/4.
Kavisha Dilhari (9) and Manudi Nanayakkara (5) were quickly dismissed by Bates and Illing respectively. Meanwhile, Samarawickrama remained steady, anchoring one end and partnering with Nilakshika Silva (17) for a 44-run stand for the fifth wicket before Silva was run out by Eden Carson.
Samarawickrama’s composed innings, marking her second ODI half-century, played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s recovery. However, rain intervened and brought the game to a halt. After waiting for a considerable time, officials were forced to declare the match as having no result.
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 147/5 in 36.4 overs (Samarawickrama 66*; Illing 2-42) vs New Zealand – No result
