Former fast bowler Mohammad Amir stated that he felt neglected and overlooked by the `Pakistan cricket establishment` following the 2024 T20 World Cup. He attributed his decision to retire again late last year to a lack of communication.
Both Amir and Imad Wasim had returned from retirement to participate in the T20 World Cup held last year. In this tournament, Pakistan, the champions of the 2009 edition, performed poorly and did not advance to the Super Eight stage. Both players subsequently announced their retirements again on back-to-back days in December.
Speaking on a television channel, Amir explained, “I felt sidelined and ignored by the Pakistan cricket setup after the T20 World Cup. Once the tournament was over, absolutely no one contacted me. I wasn`t informed if I was being considered for future plans.”
He added, “A sensible person recognizes the signals – if you`re not included in the plans, you must prioritize yourself. That`s precisely what I did. My decision is final now – international cricket, thank you very much.”
The left-arm fast bowler had previously retired from international cricket in December 2020 when he was 28, citing difficulties with coaches Misbah Ul Haq and Waqar Younis.
Amir mentioned that he had even declined a County cricket contract offer after the PCB had indicated they might consider him for the World Cup in the Americas.
Amir also stated, “Honestly speaking, I ended up spending more money than I earned [during that period]. I traveled with my trainer, and all those costs were paid out of my own pocket. But that`s a separate issue.”
In other comments, Amir expressed support for cricketers adopting an aggressive approach on the field.
He elaborated, “Cricket used to be intense. Being mentally aggressive is a crucial part of the game`s appeal. It`s not meant to be disrespectful; it`s about disrupting the batter`s concentration. Off the field, we all spend time together and share jokes.”
The 33-year-old pacer also offered support to Pakistan`s key batsman, Babar Azam, encouraging him to overcome his recent difficulties while also noting some technical weaknesses in his batting.
