USA Cricket is facing renewed turmoil as reinstated directors rejected a truce offer, deepening the internal conflict before the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) deadline. USAC is already under ICC suspension notice and recently received a legal notice from terminated directors Arjun Gona, Kuljit Nijjar, Patricia Whitaker, and incumbent director Atul Rai.
In an attempt to de-escalate tensions before a visit from ICC Chairman Jay Shah, USAC reinstated Gona and Nijjar. However, the plaintiffs are unwilling to compromise unless the court addresses their grievances, which include reinstating all three terminated directors and removing the remaining board members, including President Venu Pisike.
USAC terminated Whitaker, Nijjar, and Gona in February, citing ethics committee findings of disruptive behavior, breaches of confidentiality, and prioritizing personal interests. The plaintiffs view the non-reinstatement of Whitaker, an independent director, as discriminatory.
Atul Rai suggested that Whitaker might be seen as easier to manage compared to Gona and Nijjar. He questioned why all three weren`t reinstated if governance protocols were being followed, noting that Whitaker`s alleged offense (writing a letter to the ICC) was less serious than those against Nijjar and Gona.
The Dallas Cricket League, associated with Nijjar and Gona, criticized USAC for “discriminatory” treatment of Whitaker in a press release. They stated that reinstating only two directors reinforces concerns about unethical and undemocratic practices within USAC.
The lawsuit has also disrupted USAC director elections. Beyond ICC concerns, USAC`s internal issues have strained relations with the USOPC, which has set a May deadline for USAC to achieve a “fully functioning board” to be recognized as the National Governing Body.
