Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has broken a record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar during a Champions Trophy 2025 game against Australia in Dubai on Tuesday. Kohli appeared in good form against the Australian bowlers and achieved a solid half-century. This half-century marks his 24th 50-plus score in ICC ODI tournaments, moving him ahead of Tendulkar’s previous record of 23. Rohit Sharma of India is currently third in this list with 18 scores, followed by Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara with 17. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is fifth with 16 scores of 50 or more.

Kohli has also overtaken Shikhar Dhawan’s record of 701 runs scored in Champions Trophy tournaments between 2013 and 2017 in 10 games. Sourav Ganguly, another former Indian captain, is third for India in this tournament with 665 runs from 13 matches played from 1998 to 2004.
This milestone for the 36-year-old Kohli came as India was chasing a score of 265. He reached this feat in his 17th Champions Trophy match for India.
Earlier in the tournament, Kohli scored a century against Pakistan in Dubai and has continued his strong performance into the knockout stage. He played this significant innings after India lost their opening batsmen, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma, early in the innings.
In the match, Australian captain Steve Smith was the highest scorer for his team with 73 runs, and Alex Carey scored 61. India dismissed Australia for 264 runs in 49.3 overs.
For India’s bowling attack, Mohammed Shami took three wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and Varun Chakravarthy each took two wickets.
